corridors were identified, as well as, reaffirmation of the existing trail corridors.
Using the Metropolitan Council's Regional Trails Policy Amendment to its
Regional Recreation Open Space Development Guide/Policy Plan, Anoka
County identified the major regional trail corridors in the county. They were
adopted into the Metropolitan Council's Plan along with the Anoka County
Parks and Recreation System Plan. Mississippi River Regional Trail is one of
these regional trail corridors.
In 2006, Anoka County adopted a new comprehensive Park and Recreation
System Plan. Again input for the regional trails was obtained through a variety
of stakeholders, including a local advisory group and all local units of
government in Anoka County. One new regional trail was proposed, several
new regional trail segments were identified as well as trail segments to be
realigned. See Appendix C.
Mississippi River Regional Trail was addressed in this new system plan. This trail
corridor is proposed to follow the Mississippi Riverfrom the southernmostAnoka
County border to the Sherburne County border. The total length of the trail as
proposed is 24 miles. Currently, there are 16 miles of existing paved trail
utilizing both on-street and off-street alignments. This master plan will address
the remaining eight miles of trail to be built from the City of Anoka, through the
City of Ramsey and Mississippi West Regional Park to the Sherburne County
border.
The north segment of the Mississippi River Regional Trail corridor connects to
the Central Anoka County. and Rum River regional trails. It will connect to
Mississippi West Regional Park as well as Ramsey Town Center and local
neighborhood parks, trails and points of interest along the corridor. The trail
will make pedestrian access for area residents to the surrounding amenities
relatively easy and enjoyable.
B. Points of Interest
There are a number of existing points of interest along this proposed corridor.
Beginning at the east end is Peninsula Point Park, which offers a shelter with
restrooms and other park amenities. 1.5 miles to the west is Mississippi River
Community Park, which offers shelters with restrooms, open and covered picnic
areas, play areas for volleyball and softball, and a number of internal trails.
Just west of Mississippi River Community Park, across an oxbow of the
Mississippi, is Kings Island. Kings Island is a heavily wooded area that was used
in the past for a gravel mining operation. Nearly all of Kings Island is within the
100 year floodplain; however it has a nice combination of wooded areas and
river frontage.
