The flat-roofed building has a canted corner still
crowned by a parapet inscribed for W.H. Houlton, the original owner. The rectangular
windows have prominent brick voussoirs and there are four courses of brick banding
under the deep wood cornice. Each window has a rusticated stone sill.

The original roofline of the building had stepped and gabled parapets, and tripartite
bays on the east and south elevations. The comer bay appears to have been a later
addition, and all the bays were removed by 1955. The 1955 remodeling included the
installation of a reddish-brown polished granite facing on the entire first floor, with
large display windows replacing the originals. The upper story windows were not
altered, but the tripartite comer window was removed. The interior was also remodeled.

Elk River Historic Contexts and Phase Il Downtown Commercial Area Study
53
