Elk River Downtown Commercial Area
Property Description and Significance

304 Jackson Street, continued

Significance

This building is locally significant for its association with the Houlton family and Elk
River's early mercantile and financial institutions. The relocation of the First National
Bank at this key intersection was an important event after a series of downtown fires.
The present building was apparently completed in 1903, after a previous building also
erected by W.H. Houlton (ca. 1900) burned.

The building has housed many firms. In addition to banks owned by the Houlton
family, early tenants included the Heebner Mercantile Company and the Davis Bros.
Store.at the ground level, and masofiic organizations on the second floor, including the
G.A.R. Physicians' and other offices were also housed upstairs.

The First National Bank relocated to its present location on Main Street in 1972.

Elk River Historic Contexts and Phase II Downtown Commercial Area Study
54
