Elk River Downtown Commercial Area <br />Property Description and Significance <br /> <br />304 Jackson Street, continued <br /> <br />Significance <br /> <br />This building is locally significant for its association with the Houlton family and Elk <br />River's early mercantile and financial institutions. The relocation of the First National <br />Bank at this key intersection was an important event after a series of downtown fires. <br />The present building was apparently completed in 1903, after a previous building also <br />erected by W.H. Houlton (ca. 1900) burned. <br /> <br />The building has housed many firms. In addition to banks owned by the Houlton <br />family, early tenants included the Heebner Mercantile Company and the Davis Bros. <br />Store.at the ground level, and masofiic organizations on the second floor, including the <br />G.A.R.
