In 1894, most of Elk River's commercial buildings were north of the railroad depot. <br />The Elk River House (fo~nerly Riverside Hotel) and the Merchants Hotel (later <br />Blanchett Hotel), the Elk River Starch Company, liveries, dwellings, and a few <br />commercial buildings were located to the south. (Samborn Map Co., Minnesota Historical Society.) <br /> <br />In 1915, most commercial buildings north of the railroad depot are gone. <br />New business blocks line Jac 'kson Street south of the depot opposite the park <br />and bandstand. A row of one-story shops and a "picture theatre' are among <br />new additions to Main Street.
