St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church was organized about 1890. The first church building was a simple frame structure. A new building was begun in 1921 and the congregation occupied the basement for a number of years until a new structure was completed. Cemeteries There are four historic cemeteries in Elk River· Orono Cemetery was established in 1855 on a small peninsula on the south side of Lake Orono. Vernon Cemetery was established ca. 1855 in section 34, two blocks west of Evans Street on Railroad Drive. St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery dates from ca. 1899. It is located at 193r~ Avenue and Highway 169 in Section 27. Meadowvale Cemetery is located on County Road 32 in Section 6, partially in Livonia Township. Sherburne County Courthouse When Sherburne County was created from Benton County in 1856, the first seat was at Humboldt, later known as Big Lake. There was no permanent courthouse and business was transacted in private homes and schoolhouses. In 1867, Orono became the county seat, and the schoolhouse was used for county purposes. In 1877 a new courthouse was completed on Oak Street between Main and Depot streets. The two-story, hipped-roof frame building was designed by W.C. Warner and built by Horatio Houlton, an Elk River contractor. The design included a bracketed square tower with a pyramidal roof rising over the entry. A new courthouse was erected in 1970. The historic building was razed in 1995. Fraternal organizations and societies met in a variety of buildings. Masonic, Fraternal, and Other Organizations Many local organizations were created in the late nineteenth century and met in private homes as well as in meeting rooms in downtown business blocks· Two early organizations are of note. The Grand Lodge was organized in 1872. The temperance convictions of early settlers were reflected in the 1877 organization of the Temperance Murphy Club. Recommendations Inventory all nineteenth and early twentieth-century churches. Encourage the conservation of Elk River's historic churches, cemeteries, and related properties.
