Photo 2002.
Churches

Elk River's New England roots were reflected in the founding
of the first churches as well as fraternal organizations and
societies. The first congregation in Sherbume County was the
Trinity Episcopal Church and its first building was erected in
the late 1850s at 1915 Second Street. ?0 The structure was
moved to Elk River in 1877. The present building at 1326
Fourth Street N.W. dates from 1890-1.

The United Christian Society of Elk River was organized ca.
1866, and the Union Church ca. 1875. The present Union
Church building at 1118 Fourth Street N.W. was erected in
1881. It was designed and built by W.F. Chadbourne of Elk
River. The memorial windows were dedicated in 1923. TM The
Meadowvale Church in Elk River Township was a branch of
this congregation; it was organized in ca. 1920.

The Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1875. The
congregation met in the Orono schoolhouse until a church was
built north of the railroad tracks in 1889. A new church was
erected in 1916 along the Jefferson Highway near Minnesota
Street. 72_

The Emmanuel German Lutheran Church was organized in
1918. The congregation purchased the former Methodist
Church. Services were initially held in German and English;
one German service per month was still held in the late 1930s.

The Norwegian Lutheran Church was organized in 1933 with
about nineteen charter members. The congregation originally
rented the Episcopal Church for services, with each
congregation meeting several times per month. Services were
initially offered in both Norwegian and English.

Elk Rivet' Historic Contexts and Phase II Downtown Commercial Area Study
42
