Page 14

cultivated portion of the project area associated with the wetlands (Appendix E).

Based on the Minnesota Hydrogeologic Atlas, the water table is mapped within 0 to 50 feet of
the soil surface. The water table is shown within ten feet of the surface throughout the lower
cultivated field. Most of the project area is within 10 to 40 feet of the soil surface (22). The water
table elevation is estimated to be between 840 and 880 ft. MSL (22). Groundwater was
encountered in five of the soil borings while drilling and sampling at depths ranging from 12.5 to
55 feet below the ground surface corresponding to elevations of about 844 and 870 ft. MSL. The
observed water levels are summarized in Table 15.

Table 15. The pipes were remeasured to check for settlement. Piezometer pipe P-5
settled; therefore, the water level was referenced to the top of the steel protector pipe.
2 Not encountered

The project area is not within a wellhead protection area (WHPA) (19). The Minnesota
Department of Health (MDH) has identified a wellhead protection area north of the project area
(Elk River) and west of the Mississippi River (Otsego East). The WHPAs correspond to two
Drinking Water Supply Management Areas (DWSMA) (Elk River; 1710004 & Otsego East;
1860026).

The Minnesota County Well Index documents 169 wells within one mile of the project area.
