The original roofline of the building had stepped and gabled parapets, and tripartite
bays on the east and south elevations. The corner bay appears to have been a later
addition, and all the bays were removed by 1955.
Significance
This building is is significant for its association with the Houlton family and Elk River's
early mercantile and financial institutions. it was completed in 1906, after a previous
one built by W.H. Houlton (ca. 1903) burned. The building was extensively remodeled in
1955 and the First National moved to its present location on Main Street in 1972. The
relocation of the bank at this key intersection was important event after a series of
devastating downtown fires.
The building has housed many firms, including the Heebner Mercantile Company and
the Davis Bros. Store at the ground level, and Masonic organizations on the second floor,
including the G.A.R.. Doctor's and other offices were also housed upstairs.
