Sherburne County Multi -Hazard Mitigation Plan, 2020
flooding. Emergency management is also adding more information to the city website for the
citizens. The City has worked to reduce problems in the park from the flooding and protect the
campground and bathroom. Emergency Management is also building a website that can be
attached to the city website to provide information to the public about emergency
preparedness.
In the past 5 years, has anything, especially related to zoning or development, changed
that you feel has increased your community's vulnerability to future severe weather or
disaster events? Not yet. There are some plans that a senior 55+townhomes may be built in an
area that would be subject to flooding, but nothing has materialized from those plans yet.
Every year it seems that the potential for flooding increases. We also are experiencing some
interest in more building on the south side of our city. The City is also looking at senior citizens
population increasing in our area.
4. What concerns do you have / what mitigation actions do you think would help your
community to reduce or eliminate risk against future severe weather or disaster events? For
the area of the city of Princeton within Sherburne County: One of the issues we have run into is
that the Rum River and the West Branch of the Rum River are not included in flood forecasting.
We could use more monitoring gauges along the river and it would be great to have the
hydrologic forecasting. Also, one area that our Soil and Water dept. has concerns about is the
neighborhood behind Coborn's. There is a housing development, golf course and wastewater
treatment plant that may be subject to flooding when the water levels rise. The airport is also
somewhat close to a high-water mark and may be impacted depending on conditions. We also
have poor coverage for warning sirens near the airport and the golf course. Highway 1.69 blocks
a lot of the siren sounding due to traffic. With the industrial park in the south side of the city,
they often do not hear the sirens when they test. We are also in need of some storm shelters
near the golf course.
Part B: Local Mitigation Capabilities Assessment
1. What plans, authorities, or policies are in place to help accomplish mitigation in your
community? We are currently developing a new updates comprehensive plan for the city.
There is not one on file that would cover the city effectively. Emergency Management also
works with the industrial park owners and public for severe weather and active shooter/intruder
programs. The Cityjust recently participated with Sherburne County on installing a round-
about on the south side of the city to relieve some of the traffic congestion.
2. What staff (organizational capacity) are in place to help accomplish mitigation in your
community? The City of Princeton has an organizational chart for Emergency Management.
The Fire Chief holds the position of Emergency Manager Director and the Public Works Director
and Police Chief act as Deputy Directors.
