Fire Relief Association Presentation

Jim Nystrom, President of the Fire Relief Association, requested that
the Council contribute $19,000 to the 1993 Fire Relief Association
retirement fund. He indicated that this contribution is important to
the firefighters as they receive no other benefits from the City other
than the $8.00 per hour per call and training payments and the federal
mandated social security employer contribution. He indicated that the
$8.00 per hour has not changed since 1981. He further stated that the
firefighters have served the community well, however, they do not
receive the same benefits received by other City employees. He
requested the Council consider placing money in the retirement fund for
the Fire Relief Association.

Vice-Mayor Dietz indicated that it has not been the City's intention to
commit to spending $19,000 on a yearly basis to add to the retirement
fund as this issue needs to be evaluated annually. He further
indicated that the retirement fund has increased substantially in the
last five years. Councilmember Scheel indicated she felt that the
firefighters deserved the $19,000. Councilmember Holmgren indicated
that the $8.00 per hour that the firefighters are receiving should be
addressed. He felt that because this rate has been the same since
1981, it should be raised.

The City Administrator informed the Council that from 1981 to 1986, the
City did not make any contribution to the retirement fund. However,
from 1986 to 1992, the City has contributed $80,000 which indicated
that there has been an increased effort on the City'S part to support
the Relief Association's retirement fund.

After further discussion it was the consensus of the
any decision on this issue until the next City
which time the Mayor would be present. The Council
important to hear the Mayor's input on this
ex-officio member of the Relief Association.

Council to table
Council meeting, at
felt it would be
issue as he is an

4.3. Terry Maurer explained that this equipment will
dechlorinate the water before it is discharged into the Mississippi
River. He indicated that dechlorination of the water is a requirement
of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Terry Maurer indicated that
two bids were received and the low quote was from Trojan Technologies
at $89,600.
