Annual Events:
Night to Unite
Is a statewide event, held each year on the first Tuesday in August. Elk River
neighborhoods are invited to join cities throughout Minnesota in hosting block
parties in an effort to get to know their neighbors and discuss ways to keep crime
out of their neighborhoods. We've had a steady increase in the numbers of
registered parties each year, with 40 block parties registered in 2016. A member
of the police department stops in at each party on the night of the event to
review crime reports for their neighborhoods. Participants are also encouraged
to collect donations for "CAER" and the police department assists in delivering
these items on the following morning.
Seniors and Law Enforcement Together Committee (S.A.L.T.)
A county wide program involving law enforcement from each jurisdiction hosting
a Senior Day Out event held in May. The event includes a variety of presentations
with approximately 60-70 seniors attending. There are informational booths with
materials relevant to senior safety. The Sheriff and local Police Chiefs also attend
providing updates and answering questions.
Pet Vaccination Clinic
Held the first Saturday in May each year and is open to the public. A local
veterinary hospital offers reduced cost vaccinations for dogs and cats. P.D. staff
sells pet licenses and answers questions regarding city ordinances involving
domestic animals. 95 pet licenses sold in 2015 and 66 pet licenses in 2016.
Citizen's Academy
Eight week program that meets once a week, where members of the public are
exposed to a variety of law enforcement topics through lectures, demonstrations
and hands-on training. The program is designed to strengthen the partnership
between public safety professionals and the community.
