2. Experimental Set -Up
A. Pilot Study Equipment
1.Pumps and Tanks
Leachate was transported via trucks from the Waste Management Landfill to the
Elk River Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF). The leachate was pumped
from the trucks into two, 21,000 -gallon storage tanks. The storage tanks were
piped together into one main discharge line for a combined storage capacity of
42,000 gallons. Valves on the front of the tanks were used to isolate each tank
during the filling process. Figure 2.1 shows two leachate storage tanks and
discharge piping system that was used during pilot study.
Figure 2.1: 21,000 gallons leachate storage tanks
One primary hose pump, capable of pumping 21 gallons per minute (gpm) was
connected to the 2 -inch discharge line from the tanks. A Bredel 40 Hose Pump
manufactured by Watsen-Marlow was used. The pump was connected to a
Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) which allowed the pump to be ramped up or
down, from 0 to 60 Hz, depending on the desired flow rate. Varying the rate of
speed would vary the rate of flow pumped. The pump was calibrated using a
calibration column to determine the desired leachate feed rate. The primary
pump is shown in Figure 2.2.
Prepared by: Bolton & Menk, Inc. Experimental Set -Up
Waste Management/Elk River Leachate Pilot Study I T21.109643 Page 3
