• Large events, traffic control on TH 169 necessary — between 6,000 and
19,999 spectators and parking on the north side of the site as well as the
overflow lot on the west side of TH 169.
Using these event levels, the traffic control on TH 169 and the internal operations
are discussed in the following sections.
c. All Events
In terms of traffic, the goal for any event is to safely and efficiently move
spectators, racers, vendors, and volunteers between the parking areas and the
site activities in addition to safe movements to/from TH 169. For any event, the
access points should be clearly identified. This includes separate signing for
spectators and for participants, vendors, and employees. Besides signing,
parking information could be provided on the website and potentially in flyers or
other printed materials with tickets purchased in person or delivered online.
Internal operations must be efficient and safe to keep vehicles from backing onto
TH 169 and minimize conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians walking
between the parking areas and the site activities. Volunteers or employees
should be strategically positioned to help facilitate motorists to parking areas and
specific spots. As spectators will likely cross a primary vehicle access, 217th
Avenue, additional personnel will be needed to direct drivers and pedestrians in
the conflict areas.
To maximize use of the parking areas, the parking aisles should be clearly
identified. Paint, rope, orange flags, or similar items can be used to provide a
visible line indicating the parking rows. This will help drivers park their vehicles
evenly.
Walking paths between the parking areas on the north side of the site and the
primary activity areas should also be clearly identified, potentially using signs,
ropes, striping, or other items. Ideally, these walking paths would be separated
from vehicles with minimal conflicts.
Sufficient area should be provided at the ticketing area to allow for pedestrian
queuing without impacting vehicle operations.
d. Medium Event Operations
Events with 2,500 to 6,000 spectators will trigger the first level of traffic control on
TH 169. To provide for safe operations on TH 169 during the peak and non -peak
periods, the following is recommended:
• Provide warning signs for northbound and southbound TH 169 warning of
event traffic and changes to the intersections.
• Close the TH 169 median at the 219th Avenue and ERX access
intersections, creating right-in/right-out access only.
• Direct southbound TH 169 traffic to the 205th Avenue interchange for U-
turns to northbound TH 169 and access to the ERX site and parking.
