Elk River Phase II Inventory Form May 2002 Draft <br /> Significance <br /> This building is is significant for its association with the Houlton family and Elk River's <br /> early mercantile and financial institutions. It was completed in 1906,after a previous <br /> one built by W.H. Houlton(ca. 1903)burned. The building was extensively remodeled in <br /> 1955 and the First National moved to its present location on Main Street in 1972. The <br /> relocation of the bank at this key intersection was important event after a series of <br /> devastating downtown fires. <br /> The building has housed many firms,including the Heebner Mercantile Company and <br /> the Davis Bros.
