Agenda Item ~3b

TO: Tim Yantos, Project Director NCDA

From: Tim Kirchoff, Supervisor of Transit Operations and Planning
RE: Northstar Commuter Coach Operations Update

Date: October 17, 2001

At the most recent meeting of the Anoka County Regional Rail Authority, Commissioner
Paul McCarron had requested that an operations update of the Northstar Commuter
Coach (NCC) demonstration project be presented at the next meeting of the NCDA. I
have spoken with Jolm Tocho, MnDOT's Project Director for the NCC and he has
informed me that detailed operations data is not currently available since the service has
just entered its third week of operation. I do anticipate that once the project has some
history more detailed information will be available.

You may recall that the NCC provides 8 inbound and 8 outbound trips each weekday.
The service begins at 5:25 AM in Elk River stopping at the Coon Rapids/Riverdale park
and ride lot and terminates at the 5th Street Transit Station in Downtown Minneapolis 55
minutes later. Each coach bus has 57 seats for a total capacity of 456 passengers each
drive period. The following chart illustrates the number of inbound passenger boardings
for the first thirteen days of operation:

Northstar Commuter Coach

200-

150~

100.

50.

0.

2

3 4 5 8 9 10 11 12 15 16 17

Octobe r, 2001

Daily Inbound Passenger Boardings

Between October 1 and October 17 the number of passengers has increased over 53%. It
can be assumed that afternoon outbound trips are experiencing similar passenger loads.
