BRAUN Braun Intertec Corporation
N.~. E RT E C 1 1001 Hampshire Avenue s
I V L R L Minneapolis, MN 55438
November 17, 2011 Project BL-11-06693
Annie Deckert
City of Elk River
13065 Orono Parkway NW
Elk River, MN 55330
Re: Review of Building Common Wall
720 & 724 Main St.
Elk River, MN
Ms. Deckert:
Phone: 952.995.2000
Fax: 952.995.2020
Web: braunintartec.com
The purpose of this letter is to report the findings of a structural engineering review of the common wall
between 720 and 724 Main St. in preparation for demolition of the 720 Building.
Assignment
Braun Intertec has been retained to provide a structural engineering review of the existing wall that
separates the 724 and 720 Building located on Main St., in Elk River, MN. The purpose of this review is to
assess and provide general guidance in preparing the 720 Building for demolition and limit the amount of
negative impact to the 724 Building during the demolition, which is to remain in place.
Description
The site has three buildings located adjacent to one another. The buildings are all single story structures
with two of the buildings confirmed to have partial basement areas. The two buildings on the east end
of the site (720 Building is the center building) are scheduled to be razed and new parking lots added to
the site. The building on the west end (724 Building) will remain in place.
Observations and Comments
Braun Intertec completed a site visit on November 11, 2011 to review and determine the layout of the of
the common wall between the 720 and 724 Buildings and to provide our opinion of the general steps
required for the proposed demolition to limit the impact on the 724 Building. The following information
was obtained through the site visit:
The fronts of all of the buildings face south for reference in this report.
The roof framing of the 720 building consists of main wood girders that span the width (east-
west) direction and supporting roof and ceiling rafters that span in the north-south direction.
The roof girders are spaced at approximately 12-feet along the length of the building. The length
of the building is approximately 100-feet with an additional 10-feet that was an expansion to the
original structure.
Proi~iding engineering and environmental solutions since 7957
