Bill Collier Community Ice Arena
Klamath Falls, Oregon
Ft~
Size: 30,875 SF - $2.6 million
Klamath Ice Sports (KIS) wanted to provide a covered outdoor facility
that would be used through all four seasons, but first and foremost,
as a refrigerated outdoor ice arena. The approved design took from
the history and natural beauty that surrounds Klamath Falls. Large
concrete piers were used to represent the mountains that surround
the site. Strong laminated wood arches to represent the trees and
the lumber industry that first establish the site. A white tensile fabric
roof stretched over the arches to represent the ever present clouds in
the Oregon skies. The fabric allows the sun rays through during the
day and the arena lights illuminate the skies in the evening. Skating
is open five months of the year. The remaining time the structure is
used for weddings, concerts, and a staging area for golf events on the
Running Y Ranch Resort, which donated the property for the arena.
The area is a NHL-size (85 x 200) rink, with a storage room for the
dasher boards in the off seasons, a refrigeration room, and an ice re-
surfacer room. Future plans include alobby/warming house/locker
room facility.
The Bill Collier Community Ice Arena was the featured article on the
cover of ISI's Edge Magazine in December 2003.
