ITEM # 8.
•
City of
River
MEMORANDUM
TO: Economic Development Authority
Mayor & City Council
Energy City Action Committee for Energy (ACE)
FROM: Catherine Mehelich, Director of Economic Development
DATE: February 9, 2004
SUBJECT: joint Meeting Regarding Energy City Program
Attachment
• Energy City,Winter 1997 marketing brochure
• • Energy City current marketing brochure
Issue
The purpose of the joint meeting is to hear an Energy City presentation regarding the
various activities that have been undertaken through this program over the past seven years.
The last joint meeting was held six months after Energy City's inception and included the
HRA and Planning Commission.
There has been a substantial amount of activity that ACE has undertaken through the
Energy City program over the past seven years. It is appropriate for the EDA,City Council,
and ACE to discuss the Energy City accomplishments, challenges, and opportunities.
Background
In October of 1996,the City of Elk River received the Energy City designation from the
Minnesota Environmental Initiative (MEI) and Energy Alley. MEI is a private-nonprofit
organization consisting of energy industry leaders organized to accomplish the goal of
supporting renewable resources and energy efficiency. A subcommittee of MEI, Energy
Alley, was charged with the mission of finding a community in Minnesota that could be used
as a showcase for renewable resources and energy efficiency. Through an application
process Elk River was selected as the state's Energy City and subsequently provides a
geographic focal point for the demonstration of efficient and renewable energy products,
services and technologies.
• The attached Winter 1997 brochure indicates the earlier goals and activities of the Energy
City Program.
