Rolfe, Chief of Police
ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED By
Recognize Donation of Police K-9 Body Armor Cal Portnex, Ci Administrator
REVIEWED BY
ACTION REQUESTED
1. Recognize the donation of body armor to Elk River Police Department K-9 Zeus by Karla,
and Pat Reinhart.
2. Adopt the attached resolution acknowledging the Reinhart's contribution.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The Police Department formed a police K-9 unit over 20 years ago. Officer Adam Bebeau and
his partner Zeus are the 4`~ K-9 partners in the department's history. While serving the
community, police K-9's face the same dangers as their human partners. The value of body
armor in protecting police officers has long been recognized, however, providing the officer's K-9
partner the same protection has often been overlooked.
Karla and Pat Reinhart of Isanti County are dog lovers who recognize the unique dangers faced
by police K-9s. When the Reinhart's became aware that Zeus was using improperly fitting body
armor that which previously was used by a significantly larger police K-9, they coordinated with
Officer Adam Bebeau, the type and size body armor best suited to protect Zeus. The Reinhart's
purchased a ballistic and stab resistant vest which they have donated to the Elk River Police
Department.
The Reinhart's, Officer Bebeau and Zeus will be in attendance at the Council meeting. Chief
Rolfe will present the Reinhart's with a certificate of recognition and appreciation for their
valuable donation.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
This donation will provide a savings to the police budget exceeding $1,000.
ATTACHMENTS
^ Resolution
Action Motion by Second by Vote
Follow Up
