Item No. 3 e MEMORANDUM TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: PATRICKKLAERS 'j;3f /(/~ DATE: FEBRUARY 7,1994 SUBJECT: FIRE INSPECTION AND PREVENTION PROGRAM The City Council has discussed the need for a fire inspection and prevention program for a number of years. Most recently the City Council has discussed this issue on 3/15/93, 7/12/93, 7/26/93, and 1/3/94 (see attached minutes). As a result of these discussions, the City Council has directed City Staff to develop and implement a Commercial Fire Inspection Program. e Since this direction from the City Council, the Fire Chief has met with myself, and a number of staff members on 1/10, 1/18, 1/25, and 2/1/94. The purpose of these meetings was to clarify City Council direction and to chart the best course of action for the development and implementation of a commercial fire inspection program. Progress in the development and implementation of a commercial inspection program has been made, but, the program is not yet ready to be implemented. WORK ACCOMPLISHED In the early summer of 1993, the Fire Chief developed a self inspection fire prevention program. This program provided an opportunity for business owners to inspect their facilities for potential fire hazards and to request City assistance if necessary regarding public safety issues. This self inspection form is attached for your reference. In the fall of 1993, the Fire Chief developed a comprehensive fire inspection report form. This form is anticipated to be used when Fire Department personnel conduct visual inspections of structures as part of the fire inspection program. This report form is intended to be used for all structures and certain categories may not apply to all structures. This inspection report form is attached for your reference. e
