<br />Item # 6.4. <br /> <br /> <br />i MEMORANDUM <br />I <br />I <br />TO: Mayor and C~ty Council <br /> <br />I <br />FROM: Bill Maertz, qirector of Parks and Recreation <br /> <br />DATE: April 18, 200$ <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Park and Rec!reation Update <br /> <br />Adult Softball <br />This is the first year that Parks ~nd Recreation has managed adult softball. Rioss Demant,our <br />new Recreation Coordinator is !managing the leagues and reports that enrollment is above <br />last years levels and we have actually had to turn some teams away. Next year we will look at <br />expanding the league. . <br /> <br />House at Woodland Trails <br />The Park Commission discussed the schedule for removal of the house near the entrance <br />at Woodland Trails Park. The house is currently being used as affordable housing for <br />families in transition. The Pa4 Commission decided to explore the costs of removing the <br />building and developing this s.te as a picnic grounds with a playground. There are several <br />I <br />neighborhoods nearby that do inot have playgrounds and a large playground in this <br />location would be accessible By pedestrian trail to a substantial number of people. <br />I <br /> <br />2005 Parks Capital Improvement Projects Update <br />. Proposals for playgroUilld structures have been received, and reviewed by the Park <br />Commission. <br />. The Y AC Soccer Field, project is scheduled to break ground in early May. <br />. The trail and paving p~rtions of the 2005 Improvements have been bid out, with a <br />bid opening scheduledifor April 27. Increased fuel costs could affect the budget <br />for these projects. <br />. The ofleash dog park ~ddition to Lions Park is scheduled for installation in Early <br />May. Parks and Recre~tion staff have scheduled volunteer to teach a dog <br />citizenship class for prtppies to be held in the dog park. <br />I <br /> <br />County Road Construction ~nd Trail Development <br />The Park Commission has id~ntified the need for pedestrian facilities adjacent to county <br />roads. There are currently no l1'lans for a detached trail along Co. Rd. 1. Reconstruction <br />of Co. Rd. I has been PostpoIIied until 2006, which provides the City the opportunity to <br />explore the addition of a detaqhed trail. <br />
