REQUEST FOR ACTION
To Item Number
Ma or and Ci Council 6.2.
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Public Works Au st 17, 2009 Phil Hals, Street Su erintendent
Item Description Reviewed by
Consider Fleet Purchases for Street Division Ter Maurer, Public Works Director
Reviewed by
Tim Simon, Finance Director
Reviewed by
Mark Thompson, Fleet Committee
Chair
Action Requested
The Street Division requests Council approval of the 2009 fleet purchases of a sign truck, aone-
ton flatbed truck, and a pickup truck.
Background/Discussion
The originally approved 2009 fleet purchases included three vehicles for the Street Division; a
tandem axle dump truck at $193,000; aone-ton truck at $65,000; and a pickup truck at $28,000
for a total of $286,000. As the 2009 budget was reworked in the first half of the year due to
unallotments from the State, the Street Division agreed to move the tandem axle dump truck to
2010, and move a less expensive sign truck from 2010 to 2009, at $125,000. As part of the Fleet
Committee's $100,000 reduction, the Street Division also agreed to an additional reduction of
$28,000. The one-ton truck stayed in the revised fleet purchases at $65,000. The final amended
Fleet Capital Improvement (CIP) purchases included a total of $190,000 ($125,000 plus $65,000)
for Street Division purchases.
The Street Division proposes to purchase a sign truck, aone-ton flatbed truck, and a pickup truck
within the total budget of $190,000 allotted. We axe accomplishing this by changing the sign truck
and flatbed truck from a 26,000 lb. gross vehicle weight (GVW) to a slightly smaller 19,500 GVW
chassis body. We feel these slightly smaller truck chassis will perform adequately. This saves
approximately $12,000 per vehicle. With other minor savings, there are enough funds available to
purchase the pickup truck originally cut from the 2009 fleet purchases. All three truck chassis for
the sign truck, the flatbed truck, and the pickup truck would be purchased from Elk River Ford
off of the state contract. The proposed purchases, their price including sales tax, and vendor
information are as follows:
