Public Power Weekly <br />existing planning provisions, which Mid-American negotiated with MEAN <br />and the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities, required the company to <br />consult and share information with MEAN and MMTG. Mid-American also <br />has an obligation to allow MMTG and MEAN to participate in investments in <br />transmission line extensions. <br />The commission ordered Mid-American to correct a transmission template <br />error that would have greatly reduced transmission payments to some <br />municipal utilities. Neither Mid-American nor MISO disputed that there was <br />an error, but MISO wanted the issue addressed in a different proceeding. <br />The commission ruling that MidAmerican will not have horizontal or vertical <br />market power in the Midwest ISO and therefore can sell electricity at market- <br />based rates in the region. <br />"Having MidAmerican join the Midwest ISO will strengthen the Midwestern <br />energy markets," FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff said. -ROBERT <br />VARELA <br />Hometown Connections selects GridPoint as smart grid <br />provider <br />Hometo«m Connections, APPA's utility services subsidiary, has selected <br />smart grid company GridPoint as its exclusive smart grid solutions platform <br />provider. The marketing agreement will allow APPA utility members to <br />purchase GridPoint's software platform under favorable commercial terms and <br />deliver energy savings programs to public power customers, Hometown said. <br />GridPoint Platform 3.0 software allows utilities to integrate and customize <br />smart grid solutions, including energy efficiency, load management, <br />renewable integration, storage management and electric vehicle management. <br />Hometown Connections and GridPoint will begin marketing software that <br />meet public power utilities' immediate program needs such as demand <br />response and energy efficiency, which will enable utility customers to reduce <br />energy consumption and costs through an online energy management portal. <br />GridPoint's smart grid infrastructure will provide economies of scale to public <br />power utilities, said Hometown Connections President and CEO Tim <br />Blodgett.
