City of Elk River Top of the World Restoration - 2007 Metro Greenways Site Restoration Nomination Page 3
and pin oak with quality shrub and ground cover. The area proposed for restoration also serves as a
habitat corridor/bridge between MCBS sites and occurs along the City's Great Northern Trail
Greenway that serves as a recreational and natural resource corridor.
Describe what type and level of restoration activities are proposed and attach a site plan, plant list
(if applicable) and monitoring/management plan..
The site is proposed to be restored to species rich prairie/savanna to remove the threat of invasive
species currently at the site and provide more compatible transition to the high quality oak forest that
lies on the south side of the site to be restored. Activities are anticipated to include control of
existing nonnative/invasive trees/shrubs, and pasture grasses with herbicide/prescribed burn followed
by seeding to species rich prairie/savanna using local ecotype seed/plants, then followed by grown-in
maintenance. The restoration areas will be quantitatively sampled by Bonestroo ecologists at the end
of the first full growing season to assess the rate of development and identify areas lacking sufficient
native cover that require supplemental seeding.
B. Other Ecological Functions
In addition to habitat, natural areas and other open spaces may provide a wide variety of additional ecological benefits, such as
protection of surface and ground water quality and quantity, soil stability, and natural flood storage capacity. Restoration of sites to
enhance such functions will receive a higher priority.
Describe any other ecological functions that would be maintained or improved by restoring this
site.
The restoration area lies on the north side, and contiguous to a high quality oak forest (immediately
adjacent MCBS natural areas and Site of Biodiversity Significance). It supports mature stands of bur
and pin oak with quality shrub and ground cover. The area proposed for restoration also serves as a
habitat corridor/bridge between MCBS sites and occurs along the City's Great Northern Trail
Greenway that serves as a recreational and natural resource corridor.
II.
