Lastly, the public in Elk River supports the archaeological efforts as demonstrated by the ~
tremendous turn out for the educational tours of last year's project. Allowing public
participation in this year's project will do even more to gain public support.
#13 -Project Impact
For the State of Minnesota, Elk River is an old community, but its history is largely
unknown to many of its newer residents. Identifying local historic sites, especially those wifh
statewide significance, which are believed to exist here, will heighten the community's
awareness and understanding of preservation issues in the city. The city's HPC plans on
fully utilizing the data collected with the project in their efforts to promote historic
preservation. Elk River plans on being a leader in involving the public in archaeology and as
such can act as a model for other communities and partnerships.
