Elk River City Council Meeting <br />May 13, 1996 <br /> <br /> Retaininq Intern <br /> <br />Page 6 <br /> <br />Pat Klaers, city administrator, indicated that staff is requesting the City Council to <br />consider extending the internship time for Lea Aune to complete work on the <br />Safety Committee Project. He indicated staff would like to retain Lea for <br />approximately 80-120 hours. <br /> <br />COUNClLMEMBER FARBER MOVED TO RETAIN LEA AUNE ON A TEMPORARY, AS <br />NEEDED BASIS AT $5.00 PER HOUR TO COMPLETE THE SAFETY COMMITTEE PROJECTS. <br />COUNClLMEMBER DIEI'Z SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED 4-1. <br />Councilmember Holmgren opposed as he felt the city should pay Lea a higher <br />wage. <br /> <br />Main Street Brid.qe <br /> <br />Terry Maurer indicated that he has been requested by Councilmember Dietz to <br />investigate the cost of installing a pedestrian rail on the south side of the Main <br />Street bridge. Terry Maurer indicated that he has received a very preliminary <br />figure of $21,000 to install a railing 275 feet in length. The Council discussed the <br />feasibility of spending $21,000 for a railing on one side of the bridge. <br /> <br />COUNCILMEMBER HOLMGREN MOVED TO SPEND $21,000 TO CONSTRUCT A RAILING <br />ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE MAIN STREET BRIDGE. COUNCILMEMBER FARBER <br />SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED 3-2. Mayor Duitsman and <br />Councilmember Dietz opposed. <br /> <br />COUNCILMEMBER HOLMGREN MOVED TO RESCIND HIS MOTION. COUNCILMEMBER <br />FARBER SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED 5-0. <br /> <br />Terry Maurer indicated that $21,000 is a very preliminary figure and suggested that <br />the Council consider authorizing him to look into the matter in more detail. <br /> <br />It was the consensus of the City Council to discuss other options that would be <br />less expensive. It was further the consensus to request the city engineer to <br />investigate other protective devices for the bridge. <br /> <br />8. Staff Updates <br /> <br />There were no staff updates. <br /> <br />9. Adjournment <br /> <br />There being no further business, COUNCILMEMBER FARBER MOVED TO ADJOURN <br />THE MEETING. COUNClLMEMBER HOLMGREN SECONDED THE MOTION.
