ELK RIVER FOUNDERS COMMITTEE
MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF
AUGUST 1, 2002

ATTENDANCE: Michelle Bergh, Mary Jo Cobb, Mary Eberley, Nick Haidos, Bill Helliwell, Stephanie Klinzing, Suzanne Kostanshek,
Joni Lawrence, Bryan Olson, Cedric Olson, E.B. Stoutenburg, Susan Rivera, Chad Larmers
TOPIC DISCUSSION ACTION

Director's Report

Meeting called to order at 7:05 AM

1) Bill Helliwell and Chad met with the Elk River United Way to determine how their funding
works. They have a strong desire to reach low-income families, and children, especially children
who have difficulty getting out to participate in programs. They would like the Y to get involved.
The YMCA is familiar with the concept of picking children up for activities and returning them
to their homes using vans. As far as funding, the United Way makes decisions on in June and
July. Year 2004 would be the earliest for us to receive funding. There is the possibility that the
money we would receive would be taken from another organization.
2) Chad met with Patty from A Creative Child Preschool. She was recently displaced and had to
move her operation to Big Lake. Chad feels this may be an opportunity for the YMCA to get
involved and perhaps generate revenue. Patty seemed willing to operate under the YMCA logo
etc. The problem is space. Chad looked at Ron's Foods. $13,000 a month to lease the space. It
would also like to include some exercise equipment, showers, support staff, phone as well as
serving as a School Release Day site..Would be great to create visibility with a 5 day a week
presence. Best scenario would be if the owner would donate. Mary suspects the building will sell
and we would be displaced. Stephanie thinks the city would rather not have piece meal projects
but redevelop the area as a whole. Putting money there won't make sense. Chad encouraged
everyone to keep their eyes and ears open for space.
3) Overall, the Sherbume County Fair was a success. Joni, Todd, Stephanie, Ed, and Bill all
helped out during the 4 days. Chad has a list of people who expressed interest in helping with
committees.
4) Chad met with Ken Ebel and Sherbume County Social Services to look at Youth Intervention
opportunities. The possibility of grants for these programs was discussed. Will meet with other
agencies to see what they offer and where we can find a niche. Chad believes that for the Y to
continue to move forward we need to continue to look for these opportunities. Stephanie noted
that the County is already looking at a program for adult offenders, possibly a transitional
residence, and believes the Y can benefit from this welcoming attitude.

Minutes approved
