Consider Approval of Architect for YMCA Project

Ms. Johnson stated a panel interviewed three architectural firms out of five which submitted
proposals for the construction of a YMCA in Elk River. She stated the interview panel
recommended BWBR due to their experience with building YMCA's plus they had
competitive fees.

Councilmember Motin questioned why one of the YMCA designs done for another
community has racquetball courts when representatives from the YMCA stated they could
not do these courts for Elk River.

Anita Lancello-Bydlon, Vice President of New Development for the YMCA stated some
of the designs are of facilities completed in years past and may not be done for YMCA
projects anymore.

Councilmember Zerwas noted that some community projects, which seemed the same
square footage as the Elk River project, didn't cost near the $12 million that Elk River is
paying for this project and questioned why.

.

Ms. Lancello-Bydlon stated BWBR may not have done those projects. She stated Elk River
will have other features that cost more such as an extra fitness center, aquatics pool, and an
outdoor splash pool.

Councilmember Gumphrey, who was on the interview panel, stated BWBR is known by
other contractors as having the best construction drawings to work with on projects.

MOVED BY COUNCILMEMBER GUMPHREY AND SECONDED BY
COUNCILMEMBER ZERWAS TO APPROVE BWBR AS THE ARCHITECT
FOR THE ELK RIVER COMMUNITY YMCA PROJECT AND DIRECTED
STAFF TO ENTER INTO A CONTRACT WITH BWBR FOR THOSE
SERVICES OUTLINED IN BWBR'S PROPOSAL.
