NOOA NEWS Come to Orlando and enjoy the 7th Annual National D.A.R.E. Officers Association Conference and join us while we, "GO FOR THE MAGIC...THE MAGIC OF A CHILD'S DREAMS." Orlando's very name conjures up vi- sions of magical moments with Sea World, Walt Disney World, Wet & Wild, and Universal Studios. In preparation for the upcoming confer- ence, we will be working to bring you a complete package of educational and stimulating workshops, as well as en- tertainment for the whole family. To aid you in preparing for the confer- ence, you should know the following: Re~istration - Packages will be in- cluded in the Winter edition of the D.A.R.E. America Newsletter. Please read all directions carefully, and call our conference hotline if you have any questions -- (407) 246-3111. Lod~in~ - We have contracts with six hotels on International Drive, near the site of our conference. A 1-800 num- ber to the Orlando Visitors/Conven- tion Bureau will be included in the registration package so you can call them for information and hotel reser- vations. Only reservations made through them will ensure the confer- ence rates. Remember, if you're plan- ning a family vacation, you will want to arrange your visit after the confer- ence, since World Cup Soccer will be in Orlando the week before our event D.A.R.E. in the Community - For the first time, D.A.R.E. officers attending the conference will have an opportu- nity to meet and become involved with a local community. We are planning a free lunch cook-out with Eatonville, the oldest black township of America. Free transportation will also be provided. Outside Activites - Since Orlando is the number one tourist destination in the world, there is always something exciting going on! How about canoe- ing, camping, fishing, or a one-day cruise to nowhere? When you register at the convention site, we will have information on all these activities, personnel to make your reservations, as well as discount tickets to all of the area attractions. Start thinking about your dream vaca- tion now, plan ahead and go for the magic! AISING THE ROOF FOR D.A.R.E. Would you "dare" to build a three- bedroom house in a week? Some very ambitious D.A.R.E. volunteers in Elk River, Minnesotta accepted that chal- lenge last August when they con- structed a brand new home complete with three-car garage and landscaped yard in just seven days. The house is now up for sale and the project orga- nizers expect to raise between $100,000 to $120,000 for Elk River's Junior High D.A.R.E. program when it's purchased. About 100 volunteers worked on the house with local merchants and busi- nesses donating building materials, food and other resources to the project. A house usually takes about 60 days to complete. To make the tight one-week dline, the foundation, basement and age floors were completed ahead of time. Even with this headstart, things were pretty hectic around the site. For example, on the first day more than 20 carpenters were working at once, swinging boards around and using air guns. students were able to see, feel and understand the level of support adults in this community have for D.A.R.E. and drug education."
