America President's Message

The last few months have been a period of intense activity for D.A.R.E. as we've
launched important projects, identified opportunities for growth and marked signifi-
cant achievements. In September we had an exceptional 10th anniversary celebration
in Washington, D.C. for National D.A.R.E. Day. D.A.R.E. was recognized by our
nation's leaders at events at the White House, Capitol Hill and Drug Enforcement
Administration.

I was very proud to be part of the D.A.R.E. contigent in Washington that included
students, parents, officers, classroom teachers and D.A.R.E. supporters like KFC,
Kimberly-Clark, Warner Bros. and Bayliner Boats. I had the opportunity to witness
firsthand the respect and backing D.A.R.E. has earned in the capital.

Over the summer, D.A.R.E. established a Scientific Advisory Board to provide expert
guidance on program evaluations and prevention techniques. Comprised of some of
the nation's foremost authorities on drug prevention and research, the Board will work
with the Federal Government and the private sector to develop comprehensive
evaluations of D.A.R.E. We have also been working closely with the Center for
Substance Abuse Prevention (C-SAP) in Washington C-SAP is developing evalua-
tion standards for the prevention field and D.A.R.E. will be among the first programs
accessed against these new standards.

Other recent projects reflect D.A.R.E.'s continuing commitment to refining and
enhancing the program. We have made the final revisions to the new core curriculum
and are now preparing for its distribution. Featuring a new violence prevention
component and other updates, the revised curriculum will enable D.A.R.E. to help
young people deal more effectively with the difficult problems they face today.

Once again, I want to thank you for your contributions to D.A.R.E. As D.A.R.E.
officers, you are making a lasting and profound impact. While we continue to revise
the curriculum and other elements of the program, one fundamental aspect of
D.A.R.E. remains the same. It's your personal involvement that keeps D.A.R.E. vital
and effective. Thank you for a job well done.

With g appreciation,

~Sba;fttr

President, D.A.R.E. America
