Temporary - A part- or full-time position scheduled to work with a defined start and <br />termination date or duration of a special project. The position generally does not quaWy <br />for benefit-s. <br />or Appointed Official - A person elected as mayor or council member, or a person <br />appointed by the mayor and council to serve on a city commission or board. <br />Applicant - Any person applying for a paid or volunteer position. <br />Work Rules <br />In accepting employment with the City of Elk River, employees become representatives of <br />the city and are responsible for assisting and serving the residents for whom they work. <br />Employees shall exhibit conduct that is ethical, professional, responsive, and of standards <br />becoming of a city employee. To achieve this goal, employees must adhere to established <br />policies, rules, and procedures and follow the instructions of their supervisors. <br />All City of Elk River employees are expected to meet the followingjob requirements: <br />■ Always perform assigned duties satisfactorily and to the best of their abilities. <br />■ Always render prompt and courteous service to the public as appropriate. <br />■ Read, understand, and comply with the rules and regulations set forth in these <br />Personnel Policies as well as those of their departments. <br />■ Conduct themselves with decorum toward both residents and staff and respond to <br />inquiries and information requests with patience and courtesy. <br />■ Report all unsafe conditions to the immediate supervisor. <br />■ Maintain good attendance. <br />Orientation Period <br />The Orientation Period is an integral part of the employment process in which the city and <br />the new employee should consider whether the employment is mutually satisfactory. <br />The Orientation Period consists of the first six (6) months of employment. During the <br />period, the city will observe the employee's work to determine whether the employee <br />demonstrates s/he is qualified for the position to which s/he was appointed. Performance, <br />skills, ability, and other factors observed and demonstrated during the period are <br />evaluated by the employee's supervisor. If the employee does not meet established <br />standards, and there is reason to believe, in the city's sole discretion, that a longer review <br />period is needed, the Orientation Period may be extended to a total of 12 months. <br />New employees are not allowed to take vacation leave during their Orientation Period <br />unless approved by the city administrator or approved before hire. <br />Upon completion of the Orientation Period, the employee will become a Regular employee <br />and are eligible to use vacation leave.
