For
the sake of calculating emissions, it was estimated that ± 26.96 acres of existing woodland will
be preserved (based on the current site plan). The development will also include tree plantings
throughout the development. Trees will be planted/preserved throughout the greenway corridor.
The development will abide by Chapter 30 Section 30-936 of the Elk River City Code. Two trees
are required in all single-family uses. In an effort to convert the number of trees planted to an
acreage, it was estimated that the future planted trees equate to at least six acres.

The U.S. EPA’s Best Practices for Including Carbon Sinks in GHG Inventories, carbon
sequestration rates for forest preservation, and afforestation (planting trees on lands previously
not in forestry) were utilized (50). The estimated carbon sequestration rate in the U.S. is
estimated between 0.66-2.87 tons of CO2/acre/year. The carbon sequestration rate in the U.S. is
dependent of the existing carbon stock, and because a tree survey was not completed and the
status of the woodland is unknown, the 0.66 tons of CO2/acre/year rate was utilized (Table 36).

Table 34. On-site landscaping
will absorb a portion of greenhouse emissions and reduce the local urban heat island effect.
Consideration of additional mitigation opportunities will continue through planning, design, and
permitting.
