Vandalism at Lion John Weicht Park
We were recently made aware of several acts of vandalism at Lions. The two portable toilets were tipped over, a
play drum was broken in the playground, and some graffiti was discovered inside one of the play structures. Staff is
working with ERPD to provide them with all details available and ERPD has indicated they will increase patrols in
the park.
Mississippi Road Trail Construction
As updated in April, the city worked to acquire the necessary easements to complete the trail along Mississippi
Road. The trail will begin at Concord and run all the way to Waco. Trail easements were not able to be procured
from Orono Parkway to Concord, so the trail will not span those two blocks.
Farmers Market
The outdoor Farmers Market opens Thursday June 12. Staff is once again excited about the variety of vendors and
offerings this summer and looking forward to a great outdoor season.
Sports/Programs
Our summer staff training was Monday June 9 with all summer programs and camps starting yesterday. We have a
very busy, but fun and exciting summer ahead. Our intern, Taylor, will have a presentation at the end of summer
highlighting the fun!
The backstops on fields 1-4 at PT Complex have been replaced. The material for 5-6 will arrive soon and be
installed right away. This was a much-needed safety upgrade.
The Emergency Action Plan (EAP) was sent to all of our associations/field users. There are now laminated copies
of this at each complex, in several different locations for easy access should this document be needed. All our users
are grateful for this document as a guiding tool.
July 4 Firework Show
RES Pyro sent a letter to all clients about tariff costs associated with their products. Our contract is valid for 2025,
but it raises concerns about the sustainability of future events. CEO/President Will Wallus explained his company is
on the wrong end of the tariffs stating:
“As you may have seen in the news, tariffs on Chinese imports have become a growing concern across many
industries, including fireworks. These measures, while aimed at broader economic objectives, are having an
unintended but significant impact on the American fireworks industry—and, by extension, the patriotic community
events that rely on them each year. Currently, tariffs on fireworks imported from China—which make up
approximately 99% of the U.S. market—are ranging from 30% to as high as 147%, depending on the timing of
entry into the country. Firework companies like RES Pyro typically schedule container deliveries in the spring to
align with the summer demand, and our incoming shipments for 2025 are directly impacted by these increased
duties.”
