Memorandum
To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Jeff Shelby, Parks and Recreation Manager
Date: June 11, 2025
Subject: Parks and Recreation Staff Report
Safety Camp
Safety camp was held earlier today at Fire Station #2. The camp teaches youth how to stay safe and keep their cool
in all types of situations and environments. The camp is a collaboration between Parks and Recreation, Elk River
Police Department, Elk River Fire Department, and District 728 Community Education.
Senior Activity Center
We currently have 529 members and had an average of 72 daily check-ins for May, which is an increase over last
May’s attendance. Our day trips continue to be very popular; our two August trips filled within days of registration
opening. We are now offering 1:1 training sessions for members who want to learn how to use our online
registration system.
We plan to have a new Community Event Center Greeter volunteer position beginning later this month. Two
Senior Activities Center (SAC) member volunteers will be supporting front desk staff on Mondays and Wednesdays
as a trial run this summer. Mary Murphy already serves as a volunteer with the Book Club and Social Club. While
Larry Collins serves as a volunteer for the Walking Group and is a Fitness Leader. Both have been active members
since 2021 and some of their support will be focused on the following:
▪Welcoming patrons as they enter the facility.
▪Assisting SAC members with checking in.
▪Answering general questions about the facility.
▪Directing inquiries to appropriate staff.
Rivers Edge Commons Construction and Events
The Rivers Edge Commons Park renovation was completed in time for the Memorial Day program. A few minor
items were completed during the week following. The summer concert series kicks off Thursday June 12 with Free
and Easy Band and we are excited for the public to experience the updated space. Once again, The Bank of Elk
River is serving as the signature sponsor for the entire series, and the city is grateful for the bank’s support.
Disc Golf at Burr Oak Park
After last month’s discussion exploring a potential disc golf course at Burr Oak, community member Tim Schreder
has visited the park several times and begun the process of staking out a layout. He plans to bring other players out
to the site soon to provide feedback on the park and the layout. Staff appreciate Mr. Schreder’s continued efforts
and communication on this project.
