~

River

PROGRAM CONSIDERATIONS

SITE FEASIBILITY STUDY
GREAT RIVER REGIONAL lIBRARV SYSTEM
CITY OF ELK RIVER

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

A complete programming process has not been completed. The purpose of this document is
not to describe in detail the individual spaces designed to support the program to be housed
within the Elk River Library. This document has been completed following the review of the
physical needs and the typical requirements of similar library developments. It is not the intent
of this document to program for the existing library as it currently operates. This document
prepared to establish or modify the current programs offered.

The development of a final building program document will require extensive involvement and
review. The program will be developed in greater depth with Great River Regional Library
System during the design phase, directly following site selection. The following is a list of
assumptions and program elements considered for this site analysis.

· Gross square footage of 14,000 square feet
· Future expansion capability of 50% to 21,000 square feet
· 45,000 - 55,000 volumes
· 47 stalls required parking - 70 stalls provided for future expansion
· Material drop off - pedestrian and vehicular
· Access for community room - off hour use
· Bathrooms accessible for community room use
· Retail opportunity - Coffee Shop
· Outdoor reading rooms
· Service and delivery area
· Drive thru book drop
· Pedestrian access
· Bus drop-off

BUILDING ATTRIBUTES

Part of this discussion begins with a review of some common building attributes. This text is
prepared as a preliminary document so that fundamental program requirements (building and
site) have not been tabulated. The library space types are areas where bound paper
documents, film, or magnetic media are stored. The library space type may include both open
and closed storage systems and moveable shelving systems, and be applicable to file rooms
and other dense storage of materials.

The library is assumed to be general purpose, and may include display spaces and reading,
meeting, and electronic workstations, as defined by the desired level of access to materials
being stored. Internet access, electronic media, computer technology, and other forms of
modern-day advancements have had a profound effect on the function and design of libraries.
As a result, library space design must be flexible enough to take into account these types of
integrated technologies as well as to properly store, handle, and circulate printed and other
media types.

KKE ARCHITECTS: 0606.1159.01

- 8-

SITE FEASIBILITY STUDY REPORT
