HIGHWAY 10 CORRIDOR STUDY - FINAL REPORT
Gap Analysis
A gap assessment was completed to understand current gaps along Highway 10 to help determine if
there are sufficient gaps to allow motorists from the side -streets to access and/or cross Highway 10.
To complete this assessment, field observations were conducted to quantify the number and length
of available gaps by direction. Based on this assessment, average westbound gaps vary from 3.4 to
7.7 seconds, and eastbound gaps vary between 3.7 and 5.2 seconds. This indicates there are
limited gaps during the p.m. peak period for all movements in the westbound direction, but adequate
gaps for all movements in the westbound direction during the a.m. peak period. In the eastbound
direction, there are limited gaps during the a.m. peak period for all movements, while limited gaps
for some movements during the p.m. peak period. Table 4provides a summary of the gap
acceptance criteria used for this assessment. Note that Figurel5is an additional tool to help
evaluate gaps from MnDOT's access management manual. This approach indicates that based on
the volumes along Highway 10, there is a high risk of safety issues with any access along the
corridor.
Table 4.
