fl-
W.
40
The growth and development of Elk River reflects the evolving
transportation landscape in Minnesota and the larger Twin
Cities metropolitan region. Railroads and major highways are
long-standing key features of its network, with the Burlington
Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad and US Highway 10 (east -
west) and US Highway 169 (north -south) as defining corridors
for the city. Mobility demands are continuing to change, and as
such, Elk River has seen increased emphasis in transit, bicy-
cling, and walking.
The intersection of US Highways 10 and 169 is noteworthy as a
significant gateway feature for Elk River. Situated on the city's
south side, the intersection serves as the entry point for motor-
ists coming to the community from other parts of the region,
with the downtown core of Minneapolis located approximately
30 miles southeast. These US Highways offer good connectivity
to regional economic hubs including Minneapolis, Saint Paul,
and Saint Cloud. Maintaining good connectivity and access to
the region and across the city through an efficient and robust
transportation network is key to the future growth of Elk River.
The Transportation and Mobility Plan is intended to help guide
the development of roadways and multi -modal networks to
promote accessibility and safety in line with the vision for
future land use and development in the community.
Elk River Comprehensive Plan • Transportation & Mobility Plan
DIAM291iII AR:LV/l: LViTWi0101WO
75
