Electrical System
Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) operates the electrical
system in Elk River. Power is purchased from the Minne-
sota Municipal Power Agency and distributed by ERMU
through a distribution system of lines and substations
that are constructed and operated by ERMU. Electricity is
generated primarily through four generation units, with
the landfill gas generation facility at the landfill contrib-
uting in addition to the four units. After the completion
of territory transfers in 2019, ERMU now provides electric
service to the entire footprint of Elk River. In addition to Elk
River, ERMU now also serves portions of Otsego, Dayton,
and Big Lake Township. The expansion of territory covered
means that there are now 611 miles of electric lines ERMU's
system, with 70% of those lines underground.
Develop Electrical Lines and/
or Substations to Meet Service
Needs of New Development
ERMU's electric power service has received recognition
for consistency as a reliable power provider - national
recognition through the "Reliable Public Power Provider'
(RPA award program. As development occurs within Elk
River, additional lines and/or substations will be neces-
sary to maintain the high levels of service that ERMU has
achieved.
102
101X-11arri7:1OWN IMiVEi701Wo
Infrastructure • Elk River Comprehensive Plan
