Elk River Public Library Board Page 2
April 27th,2021
5.1 New Business
a. Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director-Provide updates from
Tim Sevcik on rain garden, flower boxes, and CIP report from Finance
Director Lori Ziemer
■ Michael Hecker presented the rain garden update. The plants will be
put in around May. Chair Dreissig said she defers to Mr. Sevcik' s
expertise on the rain garden. She asked if there would be any
additional watering. Secretary Dawn Larson referenced what Mr.
Sevcik said in the previous meeting that the parks maintenance team
would support the plants with water for the first year until they are
established.
• The planter boxes for the Junior Master Gardener program have
been ordered but may take some time to arrive. Master Gardener
Karen Olson and Parks Superintendent Tim Sevcik were in contact
since the last meeting to discuss the details. The University of
Minnesota Extension Program, which oversees the Master Gardener
and Junior Master Gardener's has temporarily suspended the
programs from offering in-person instruction. The board reviewed
the photo provided in the meeting packet showing where the new
planter box will be located.
• Chair Dreissig asked Mr. Hecker who will be maintaining the
butterfly garden outside the library this year. The Master Gardeners
confirmed at the previous meeting that they do not maintain any
gardens outside of their Junior Master Gardener program. Mr.
Hecker said he would contact Mr. Sevcik and report back to the
board at the next meeting. Chair Dreissig offered to weed it herself
and do some spring cleanup. Commissioner Keifenheim stated that
at one time Eileen Stombaugh was volunteering with weeding the
gardens and that the board should find out if she will be continuing.
Commissioner Keifenheim said she would help as well. Councilman
Christianson offered his help too. Chair Dreissig said it would not
take a large amount of effort or a large group. Commissioner
Keifenheim pointed out that it is a native pollinator garden and that
is why it might look so bad right now with all the dead stuff in it.
Chair Dreissig asked Mr. Hecker if Tim Sevcik could meet the group
out at the garden one day to review what needs to be weeded and
what needs to be kept with the group. Mr. Hecker said he would
contact Mr. Sevcik to arrange a time for him to meet them at the
garden. Mr. Hecker or Secretary Larson will let Chair Dreissig know.
• Mr. Hecker presented the CIP information that was in his report. Ms.
Schake explained that the$10,000 on the report was left in the
account as a rollover since with COVID this past year the library was
not able to do very much. There was not a facility walk through in
2020 to help give input on items to purchase. Ms. Schake said that
the library is not currently allowing the use of the reading and lounge
/ O V E I E I I Y
INAfUPE
