Sherburne County Multi -Hazard Mitigation Plan, 2020 <br />operations of the county owned outdoor warning sirens. Although Elk River, Zimmerman and MNGP <br />service, maintain, and test their own sirens, the Sheriff's Office Communication Center is responsible <br />for sounding them and serving as the warning point. County guidelines on the use of warning sirens <br />include: Protection of Life- The sole purpose of outdoor warning sirens is forth protection of life. Public <br />Warning- In order to reduce public confusion, outdoor warning sirens should be sounded for public <br />warning purposes only. Take Shelter -The public should know that hearing an outdoor warning siren is a <br />call to take immediate life-saving action. The desired individual action is to take shelter and get <br />information. All Hazards- Outdoor Warning Sirens are not "Tornado Sirens." Sirens maybe used for all <br />types of hazards where emergency officials want people in a defined area to "get inside then get <br />information." <br />Summer Storms Winter Storms-xtreme Temps Drought 'yam (Failure <br />Severe Weather Awareness Weeks — Sherburne County helps promote and participates in the Minnesota <br />Department of Public Safety and the National Weather Service's "Severe Weather Awareness Week" <br />held in April each year and the "Winter Hazard Awareness Week" in November each year. Each week- <br />long event seeks to educate residents on the dangers of severe storms and highlights the importance of <br />preparing for severe weather before it strikes. <br />Summer Storms Floods <br />SKYWARN Program — On an annual basis Sherburne County works with the National Weather Service to <br />schedule and promote SKYWARN trainings with First Responders and the public. Information is put out <br />via the SC Sheriff's Office FB/Twitter page and local medial sources. <br />'inter Storm! Floods <br />National Flood Insurance Program — Sherburne County and all cities have FEMA mapped high -risk flood <br />areas and participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). <br />Summer Storms Winter Storm, Floods Sxtreme Temps Drought Dam Failure <br />Sherburne County Floodplain Ordinance & Floodplain Maps — Sherburne County Planning and Zoning <br />Department maintains and enforces the county's floodplain ordinance. The goal of the floodplain <br />ordinance is to minimize the threat to life and property resulting from flooding. FEMA Floodplain maps <br />for Sherburne County are available for viewing on the County website. <br />Floods <br />Sherburne County Public Works 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan — Sherburne County Public Works <br />maintains a 5-year CIP (2o3.8-2022) for transportation infrastructure projects that include projects that <br />address flood mitigation (bridge replacements, culvert replacements, reconstruction and pavement <br />resurfacing). A map of the 2o3.8-2022 proposed projects is available on the county website. <br />Wildfire <br />Local Fire Departments —There are six fire departments located in Sherburne County. Each department <br />is responsible for wildfires within their department boundaries along with the Minnesota Department of <br />Natural Resources, however, they often work together on larger fires, including wildfires. <br />Summer Storms Winter Storm!
