Table 27 lists some of the notable droughts which impacted the county. <br />Table 27. DrouQhts ImvaetinQ Sherburne <br />In mid -September the entire county was in a moderate drought (DI.). A month later about 60% of <br />9/201.2 — the county was in a severe drought (D2) and the remaining 40% in an extreme drought (D3). The <br />5/201.3 entire county remained in >_D2 drought conditions until mid -April, and by the end of May no <br />portion of the county was in drought. <br />1.2/2011— In December, 3/4 of the county was in a moderate drought (Di.) and the other 1/ was abnormally <br />dry (Do). By the new year the entire county was in a moderate drought (Di) where it remained <br />5/2oi2 until early May 201.2. <br />USDA designated 24 counties as primary natural disaster areas because of drought that occurred <br />2007 in May 1., 2007. The Sherburne County Board of Commissioners declared a local disaster for <br />Sherburne County. <br />Established new "average low precipitation" and "average high temperature" records. Farmers <br />lost most, if not all, of the year's crop. Drought also affected power production, the forest <br />1.987-1.989 products industry, public water supplies and fish and wildlife dependent on adequate surface <br />water. Mississippi River flow levels threatened to drop below the Minneapolis Water Works intake <br />pipes. <br />Began in 1.974 in parts of south-central and western MN. Most severely affected areas were the <br />Otter Tail and Lac Qui Parle River basins. Dry conditions caused lower water levels in wells and <br />1976 1977 caused record low stream flows throughout the state. Late summer forest fires broke out and <br />conflicts arose between domestic well owners and neighboring high capacity well owners. <br />Page 177 <br />
