ARTISTIC MERIT/QUALITY
Molecular will be a unique and meaningful sculpture. Some people will love it. Some people
will hate it and question the very existence of public art. But, most importantly, some people
will be intrigued enough to really look at it and wonder what it is all about. And then appreciate
the piece. Again, maybe they don't even like it and wonder how it all fits together but if they
notice it, then maybe they will notice the next piece down the road. And then maybe a piece in
another city and slowly the appreciation turns into something more.
How do I know this? It happened to me. I went from a non-artist, to an appreciator of
sculpture and then to a public art sculptor! I'm a much more interesting person for it and feel
that my art has had an impact on others too. In a way, a work of public art is like a nebula, but
rather than a birthplace for stars, it's a birthplace for growth and reflection.
I travel the country and install sculpture in annual lease programs. One of the best parts of
these trips is getting to mingle with the community. It's amazing to see the light of inspiration
in the eyes of a kid who is admiring a sculpture. Even more amazing is the person who
surprises by even asking about art --this is the one who approaches with a grumpy look and
then suddenly opens up about their past desire to do art but that "life got in the way". I always
encourage these people to go for it and do art!
Considering the survey results, this sculpture should be located in the downtown area. The
exact location is to be determined based on the final dimensions of the piece.
Craig Snyder/Homan Wong Elk RiverProposal
