Tllallk YOII <br />for dOllatillg Illolley to tIt is prograll1, it JVOllld Ilot be SllC!' a Sllccess /1 ad YOII not givell <br />liS tltis opportllllity! <br /> <br />History: <br /> <br />Our program was plalU1ed and implemented with the coordination of Chris J OPP, our Site <br />Director, and COlll1ie Schwecke, our Program Director. Both of these individuals have <br />education degrees and experience in teaching youth. They worked together to come up <br />with interesting programs involving the landfill abatement and recycling philosophy for <br />our youth. <br /> <br />During the months of April through June the following programs were offered: <br /> <br />1. Earth Day- The highlight of this sessions' events was Earth Day on April 24. <br />We celebrated environmental education and tree preservation by partnering <br />with ALCOA Kama and Reynolds Food Packaging in planting nearly 1000 <br />trees in our local parks. This day included an educational component from <br />Tri-County Solid Waste Management Commission. The children were <br />involved in the promotion of the event by making posters, as well as the day <br />itselfby participating in the Earth Day activities. We were very fortunate to <br />l1ave KARE 11 give us live coverage at the Club for our event. About 100 <br />people helped make this day a success! <br /> <br />2. Environmental Art- Our staff created art projects with the members from <br />items which would have simply been thrown away. The children used their <br />creativity to put junk to use in a creative way! This program continues to be <br />popular with the younger children. During the art programs the Program <br />Assistant was able to promote the balance between industry and a clean <br />enviromnent. Examples include mosaics and leaf rubbings. <br /> <br />3. Compost Bucket- Our Club members got the opportunity to sort through Club <br />garbage cans to discover what items were biodegradable. This garbage was <br />collected on a regular basis and kept on-site in our own Club compost bucket. <br />The youth also learned the effect of littering on the environment. The <br />
