The free rides were a big hit and went on all <br />afternoon. <br />In general, Fire Chief Bruce West said there was a very <br />nice turnout for the open house. <br />Among the events was bingo, sponsored by the VFW <br />Auxiliary. A total of $227 was raised, which will go to the <br />Guardian Angels. <br />The fire department also sponsored a dance that night. <br />New plan will be reviewed <br />A draft of Elk River's new comprehensive plan will be <br />reviewed next week by the committee which has been over- <br />seeing its update. <br />The plan covers several components including residential, <br />commercial, industrial, transportation, utilities and park <br />and recreation. <br />The committee's meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. <br />21, at Elk River City Hall, 13065 Orono Parkway, and is <br />open to the public. <br />Deputy <br />Elnntinued frnm nsa¢e 1 <br />"During my early years in <br />sports he was my biggest fan," <br />said Travis. "He took pride in <br />all our accomplishments. And <br />he took pride in being in <br />charge of the boat and water <br />patrol division. When I was <br />home he brought the boats <br />home and showed me how <br />clean he kept them. That was <br />his life." <br />Basavage was born in the <br />small Wisconsin town of <br />Canton. He grew up in <br />Columbia Heights, where he <br />of accepting a position at the <br />Sherburne County Sheriff's <br />Office. <br />One of his favorite hobbies <br />was bird watching. "We live <br />along the river and he just <br />loved to watch the birds," said <br />his wife. <br />Besides, his wife, Susan and <br />son, Travis, Basavage is sur- <br />vived by his two daughters, <br />Robin and Erin; his mother, <br />Stephanie of Mounds View; <br />sisters, Janet Sanetra of Frid- <br />ley, Darlene Sibell of Columbia <br />Haiah4c anri Rharon Allen Of <br />
