The Honorable Hank Duitsman, Mayor
Elk River City Hall
13065 Orono Parkway
Elk River, MN 55330
Dear Mayor Duitsman:
On Friday, September 29th,
call from Council member Scheels
because I had signed a petition
land in parcels smaller than the
our area. Council member Scheels
offend you? ...Why can't I sell
responded that I did not object
property as long as it was sold
October 2, 1995
I received an unnerving phone
. She said she was calling me
regarding her request to sell
city ordinance requirement for
asked me, "What have I done to
my land for a profit?" I
to her selling any of her
in lots of 10 acres or more.
She responded, "I think people should be able to do whatever
they want as long as it makes them happy." I replied, "That is a
dangerous "blanket statement" you are making." She then added,
"Well as long as it doesn't hurt anyone."
I told her the reason my husband and I chose to live in this
area was because of the "10 acre minimum ordinance." We do not
want to live in a development and we enjoy the feeling of being
in the country. It is important to my family to keep the "10
acre minimum ordinance" in effect. Council member Scheels went
on to ask how I thought Berthel (a farmer who sold a large parcel
of land which was split into 10 acre lots) felt about all us "ten
acre people moving in. I replied that I could not answer that
question since I had never met the man. I then said, "I really
feel like you are harassing me, and I am going to end this
conversation now." I then hung up the phone.
Miring tho WOPIZ-end nci"hhnrc (mhn haA alcn
signed the petition) mentioned receiving a phone call from
Council member Scheels. They also said that her tone was less
than pleasant; even abrasive.
I truly believe Council member Scheels conducted herself in
an inappropriate manner. It irritates me that a member of our
City Council feels they have the right to "bully" people who do
not agree with their personal agenda. I welcome your comments on
this subject.
Sincerely,
De ita Palmer
9980 213th Avenue
Elk River, MN 55330
