U.S.Retail Electric Stagnant growth of electric sales presents planning challenges for
Sales Stagnant many utilities. Recent Energy Information Administration(EIA)
data show that since 2003, overall retail electricity sales have risen
by less than 5.5%. However, between 2007 and 2017, there was a
decrease, albeit small, in overall retail electricity sales. EIA reported
that between 2003 and 2017, slight residential and commercial user
growth was offset by a decline in industrial users' sales. Below are
two graphs that show this phenomenon.
Annual U.S.Retail Sales of Electricity
4,000,000
3,500,000
3,000,000
3 2,500,000
2,000,000
1,500,000
1,000,000
500,000
0
Source:U.S.Energy Information Administration
Annual U.S. Retail Sales of Electricity by Sector
1,600,000
1,400,000 , •.
1,200,000
1,000,000
0 800,000
600,000
—Residential
400,000 —Commercial
200,000 Industrial
0
Source:U.S.Energy Information Administration
78
