The chart in Figure 5-2 shows the <br /> estimated distribution of existing land uses.The numbers in the chart refer to the <br /> acres in the land use and its share of the total. <br /> The analysis of existing land use in Elk River illustrates several important issues <br /> about current and future development: <br /> • The vacant category in this chart includes all of the non-developed land <br /> uses. These uses include wetlands, flood plain, open water, other natural <br /> areas, and other undeveloped land. Over one-half of all land in Elk River <br /> falls into one of these land uses categories. <br /> • Residential development is the largest"built"land use. The three residential <br /> categories account for 23% of total land use.
