• "C" Terms
The Canterbury School has two "C"terms during the school year. For the 2002/2003 academic
year, a theater arts course will be offered during the month of January. Students in all grades will
learn about theater production including acting, set building, directing and costuming. The school
will put on its play at the end of the term for parents and friends.
A German immersion course is scheduled at the end of the school year, when students will learn
about German culture, history and cooking while enhancing their ability to speak and understand
the German language.
Character Development Emphasis
Built into our curriculum is an emphasis on the value of developing strong character traits.
Patience, self-discipline, courtesy and personal responsibility will characterize our environment and
be brought to life for students through literature, role playing and modeling by our faculty.
International Baccalaureate Program for High School Students
In the words of the IB Organization: The IB program is a rigorous pre-university course of study,
leading to examinations, that meets the needs of the highly motivated secondary school student.
Beyond intellectual rigor and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of
IIIinternational understanding and responsible citizenship, to the end that IB students may become
critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world
affairs, conscious of the shared humanity that binds all people together while respecting the variety
of cultures and attitudes that makes for the richness of life.
Will The Canterbury School teach religion?
Canterbury School will not provide spiritual instruction. However,we value and support the faith
and background of our students. We will acknowledge religious holidays and students will be free
to express the concepts and ideas of their faith. Part of character development comes with
understanding and respecting the beliefs and opinions of others.
Are you accredited?
A private school must be at least two years old before it can be accredited by an outside
accreditation agency. The Canterbury School is working toward this end with ISACS, an
accrediting agency approved by the Minnesota Department of Children,Families and Learning.
Barring outside accreditation, a private school must give its students a standardized assessment test
annually(we will be using the Iowa Test of Basic Skills)and report the results to the superintendent
of the local school district.
• Another note: the state of Minnesota requires all schools—public and private-to teach certain
subjects; specifically, English, math, science, history, geography and health.
