The eighth graders for the academic year 2002/2003 will be Canterbury's first graduating class. What makes The Canterbury School unique? The Core Knowledge Curriculum The Canterbury School curriculum is based on E.D. Hirsch Jr's Core Knowledge concept that for the sake of academic excellence, greater fairness and higher literacy, elementary and middle schools need a solid, specific, shared core curriculum in order to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge, grade by grade. It calls for schools to return to a traditional,thorough • academic foundation and emphasizes the student's personal responsibility for his/her education. Motivated students discover a love of learning and new challenges. Core Knowledge, known as the common ground for uncommon success,was developed by University of Virginia professor E.D. Hirsch, Jr. Dr. Hirsch is the author of"Cultural Literacy," "The Schools We Need,"and the series"What Your(First-Eighth)Grader Needs to Know."He is also President and Chair of the Core Knowledge Foundation—whose regional office is located in St Paul. The Core Knowledge Foundation provides classroom resources, staff training and support for schools teaching the core knowledge curriculum.
