This memo references correspondence from the Sherburne County
Tree Board, Tim Edgerton,Forester dated May 13, 1998.
• In response to the forest health and preservation concerns raised by the developer,Mr. Homer Tompkins
of Contractors Property Developers Corporation, it was suggested that the site be reviewed for the
presence of oak wilt. A site review was arranged involving Mr. Tim Edgerton of the Sherburne County
Tree Board and myself. The results of the review indicate that one pocket of oak wilt does currently exist
on the property; however, it appears that the location corresponds to a proposed road construction
corridor. It is anticipated that the diseased and dead trees will be removed in association with road
clearing and any additional treatment deemed necessary(i.e., trenching) will be coordinated on the
recommendation of Mr. Tim Edgerton at the time of road clearing activities. The timing of road clearing
activities is dependent on the rate at which development of this site progresses and which areas are built
first. Mr. Edgerton mentions in his letter that it would be desirable to see oak wilt control activities occur
this summer. It is unclear at this time if that will be feasible.
In addition to controlling the oak wilt currently on the site, construction activities will include precautions
to prevent future oak wilt pockets from developing. Construction activities will be limited during the
time of oak wilt spread(May-July) and any oak wounds which occur during this window will be treated
with paint.
With proper tree removal, planning, and preventative measures, it is not anticipated that oak wilt will
present a threat to the proposed forest preservation on this site.
•
